My starting point is the Lian Li A3-mATX, an AM5 micro-ATX motherboard, a sensible-power Ryzen processor and a compact graphics card if you need one. A well-planned air-cooled build is easier to live with than a small box filled with the hottest parts available.
Finish the desk with the monitor, work mouse and keyboard. Use an external backup routine for the important files.

TogglePlan the work before the parts
Decide whether size or noise comes first. A compact mesh case gives you useful ventilation and a smaller footprint; a larger airflow tower can run larger cooling hardware with more room to work. Quietness comes from heat output, fan control and the complete layout, not just a “silent” product name.
Measure the available desk space and choose where the case can breathe. Map the board, GPU, power supply and cooler together before ordering. In the A3, PSU position changes usable GPU space, and bottom fans reduce the space for a thick graphics card. Build the actual layout rather than combining every advertised maximum.
Build an AM5 tower in PC Builder to see the PC in 3D, compare planning estimates and save your selected parts. Use the workload and setup advice here to refine the choices.
For an office desk without a planned graphics-card upgrade, a ready-made mini PC is another space-saving route. Compare the home-office mini-PC choices when a complete small machine fits the job better than assembling a compact tower.
Choose a complete build route
The three columns are complete alternative starting points. Choose a column first, then use the component sections to make a deliberate change. CPU, motherboard and memory must stay on the same platform; a compact case also needs the matching board and power-supply layout.
| Part | Compact office build | Compact gaming build | Quietness-first larger build |
|---|---|---|---|
| Processors | Ryzen 5 9600X | Ryzen 5 9600X | Ryzen 7 9700X |
| Graphics Cards | Processor integrated graphics | ASUS Dual RX 9060 XT 16GB | MSI RTX 5060 Ti 16GB Shadow 2X OC Plus |
| Motherboards | MSI B850M Gaming Plus WiFi6E | MSI B850M Gaming Plus WiFi6E | Gigabyte B650 Eagle AX |
| RAM Kits | Crucial Pro 32GB DDR5-6000 | Crucial Pro 32GB DDR5-6000 | Crucial Pro 32GB DDR5-6000 |
| SSDs | Crucial P310 2TB M.2 2280 | Crucial P310 2TB M.2 2280 | WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB |
| Power Supplies | Corsair SF750 (2024) | Corsair SF750 (2024) | Corsair RM850e (2025) |
| PC Cases | Lian Li A3-mATX wood-front | Lian Li A3-mATX wood-front | NZXT H5 Flow (2024) |
| CPU Coolers | ARCTIC Freezer 36 Black | Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE | Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE Black |
The balanced route is my usual starting point for quiet and compact builds. The lower route has a narrower workload; the premium route spends on a defined capacity, performance or layout need. Include Windows, the display, peripherals and backup storage in the complete budget using the build budget calculator.
Choose your processor
For a compact PC that sits near the desk, I’d start with the 9600X rather than the hottest processor the socket can accept. It works with the micro-ATX AM5 board and modest air-cooling route, and integrated graphics remove a heat source in the office version. The 9700X is the step up when creative work needs more CPU capacity.
| Best for | My choice | Why I’d choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall for manageable heat | Ryzen 5 9600X | Sensible-power AM5 starting point for a small air-cooled PC. |
| Best for compact creative work | Ryzen 7 9700X | Eight-core productivity option without jumping to the 16-core route. |
| Best premium compact gaming choice | Ryzen 7 9850X3D | Use when high-refresh gaming justifies the stronger CPU and cooling plan. |
The 9850X3D is the premium gaming alternative, with a cooler and fan plan appropriate to its workload. A small enclosure does not have to be a low-performance PC, but the parts should earn their heat and space. If a long CPU render is the main job, compare a larger tower before buying a high-power processor for the smallest enclosure. Case footprint and quietness are related choices, not identical ones.

Read CPU power and cooling to choose a processor/cooler combination around sustained use and noise. The compatibility guide covers the exact socket mount and platform.
Choose your graphics card
For the compact gaming basket I’d choose the ASUS Dual RX 9060 XT 16GB. The exact 202mm model leaves much more layout freedom than the large premium card. The MSI 5060 Ti 16GB is the Nvidia creative alternative at 226mm. Those dimensions help with fit; neither is a claim that this untested assembled PC is the quietest option.
| Best for | My choice | Why I’d choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall compact gaming model | ASUS Dual RX 9060 XT 16GB | 202mm length with 16GB capacity. |
| Best Nvidia creative alternative | MSI RTX 5060 Ti 16GB Shadow 2X OC Plus | 226mm 16GB CUDA/OptiX route. |
| Best no-GPU office route | Use the processor’s integrated graphics | Integrated graphics removes card space, heat and a fan source. |
| Best lighter Nvidia tier | ASUS Dual RTX 5060 8GB OC | Modest GPU route for a lower-performance compact basket. |
Plan power-supply position, connector space and fan placement together. Lian Li limits GPU thickness to 61mm with 25mm bottom fans in the A3, so do not combine a thick premium card with that fan layout by assuming the case’s four-slot headline still applies. For an office version, integrated graphics is the cleanest compact choice. For heavier gaming, a larger case may offer the easier cooling and noise balance.

Choose your motherboard
For the A3 basket, I’d choose the B850M Gaming Plus WiFi6E. Micro-ATX gives a useful smaller footprint while keeping four memory slots and two M.2 sockets. It also avoids pretending that the full ATX Eagle can fit the compact enclosure. Check the lower header access with the selected GPU before installing the card.
| Best for | My choice | Why I’d choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall compact AM5 board | MSI B850M Gaming Plus WiFi6E | Micro-ATX fits the A3 without needing a mini-ITX platform. |
| Best premium micro-ATX alternative | MSI MAG B850M Mortar WiFi | Choose when the exact connection and layout upgrade is useful. |
| Best larger quietness-first build | Gigabyte B650 Eagle AX | ATX board for the H5 tower alternative. |
The Mortar is the premium micro-ATX alternative when its actual ports and layout justify the spend. If quietness matters more than the smallest footprint, the ATX Eagle in a larger H5 tower is a separate sensible route. Buy the case and board together: the two variants are alternatives, not a shopping list where every “best” choice can be mixed freely.

Read the board/platform guide and check the case’s internal connections. PCIe and M.2 sharing keeps the planned drives and expansion cards usable together.
Choose your memory
In a compact air-cooled build, I’d choose the memory alongside the cooler. The 32GB Crucial route is the starting point; a matched 64GB kit is useful for the creative version. The important physical measurement is the installed module height and the cooler’s front fan, because lifting that fan can turn a nominally suitable heatsink into a side-panel problem.
| Best for | My choice | Why I’d choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall manageable compact kit | Crucial Pro 32GB DDR5-6000 | 32GB with a straightforward two-module layout. |
| Best compact creative capacity | Crucial Pro 64GB DDR5-5600 | 64GB without filling all four board slots. |
| Best performance-focused 32GB alternative | Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30 | Check exact module height and cooler fan position. |
Two modules keep the configuration manageable and leave the other slots available. Do not pay for tall lighting heatspreaders before checking the cooling layout. In the A3 basket, the Peerless Assassin’s published heatsink height leaves a planning margin below the case’s 165mm limit, but a raised fan uses that margin. Establish a stable default boot before enabling the advertised memory profile.

Plan the RAM capacity for the work kept open together and the supported module arrangement. The profile guide covers setup once all memory is working at defaults.
Choose your SSD
An M.2 NVMe drive is convenient in a compact build because it needs no separate SATA power or data lead. I’d start with the P310 2TB for gaming and office use, or the SN850X 2TB for heavier creative work. Install it before the large cooler and GPU make the socket difficult to reach, then use the motherboard’s supported heatsink arrangement.
| Best for | My choice | Why I’d choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall compact build capacity | Crucial P310 2TB M.2 2280 | 2TB M.2 keeps storage off the cable-routing plan. |
| Best compact creative project drive | WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB | 2TB performance-oriented option for more demanding file work. |
| Best larger cable-free library | WD_BLACK SN850X 4TB | 4TB without adding a SATA power and data pair. |
A 4TB drive can avoid adding a separate drive cage and cable bundle when a larger library is necessary. Check double-sided clearance and the exact socket location rather than assuming every capacity version fits identically. Keep cooling and access in mind: the drive should not sit under an improvised stack of heatsinks. The compact layout still needs an independent backup, even when all active storage fits neatly on one module.

Choose enough working storage, then check the exact SSD format/interface. The PCIe comparison helps decide whether the speed premium serves this build.
Choose your power supply
I’d choose the SF750 for the A3 build because space for the GPU, connectors and routing matters. The smaller format can make the plan easier than a long ATX supply. Use the modest-power compact basket and correct bracket. The 750W rating does not make it the right choice for a card whose manufacturer recommends 850W.
| Best for | My choice | Why I’d choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall compact layout | Corsair SF750 (2024) | SFX format frees space in the A3 basket. |
| Best larger quietness-first tower | Corsair RM850e (2025) | Modular ATX unit for the H5 alternative. |
| Best modest ATX-budget alternative | MSI MAG A650BN | Only when the bracket and cable space work. |
The RM850e is the modular ATX route for the larger quietness-first tower. The A650BN is a simpler alternative only when the case’s ATX position, cable bundle and selected GPU work together. Read the A3 configuration diagram before combining maxima. Leave space for bends and use approved cables; a tidy appearance must not put tension on connectors.

Match PSU load, connectors and installed space together, then keep the exact compatible cable set with the unit.
Choose your case
The A3 is my compact choice because it uses a mainstream micro-ATX board and flexible PSU layout without requiring a riser-cable build. Plan around the 165mm cooler limit, GPU thickness and supply position. With 25mm bottom fans, Lian Li gives 61mm of GPU thickness space; a thicker card needs another layout.
| Best for | My choice | Why I’d choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall compact footprint | Lian Li A3-mATX wood-front | 26.3L design with configuration-dependent space. |
| Best quietness-first tower alternative | NZXT H5 Flow (2024) | Room for uncomplicated air cooling. |
| Best restrained tower with fans | Phanteks XT Pro Ultra | A larger footprint with useful starting cooling. |
If sound at the desk matters more than the smallest footprint, compare the H5 with a low-heat basket. More room can make air cooling, cabling and maintenance easier. The Phanteks is the larger fan-equipped budget alternative. Size and quietness are different priorities: choose which leads, then build hardware and fan control around it.

Use the case-fan shortlist for the usable mounts and PWM/DC setup for the finished layout.
Choose your CPU cooler
For the A3 gaming basket I’d start with the Peerless Assassin and low-profile RAM. The published 155mm heatsink is below the case’s 165mm limit, leaving a margin that must cover actual fan position. The Phantom Spirit’s 154mm specification gives a similar fit question. Choose the installed arrangement, not only the bare-heatsink dimension.
| Best for | My choice | Why I’d choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall compact air route | Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE | 155mm heatsink with a checked fan position. |
| Best modest-power compact choice | ARCTIC Freezer 36 Black | For the 9600X office basket. |
| Best fuller compact dual tower | Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE Black | 154mm heatsink with actual RAM clearance. |
The Freezer 36 suits the modest-power office route. I would not put the large Noctua here without changing the case, or assume every 360mm AIO fits beside every GPU and PSU position. A small air-cooled PC is a manageable first project. Keep the fan response calm under light tasks, then check sustained cooling with the case closed.

Check the complete basket
The A3 uses the micro-ATX MSI board, not the ATX Eagle. Keep the SF750 with the modest-power compact basket and allow GPU cable space. The larger quietness-first column uses the H5 tower and ATX board; it is a separate route. Add the necessary case fans to the A3 plan, because mounting positions do not mean fans are supplied.
Use the complete compatibility checklist and the substitution guide before changing a recommended part. Keep one coherent list so a last-minute replacement does not quietly change the platform or physical layout.
Assemble, set up and start working
Prepare the board, CPU, memory and M.2 drive before access becomes tight. Follow the assembly sequence, route power and front-panel connections, then install the graphics card where the build includes one. Connect the display to the intended output and prove a stable boot before enabling faster memory settings.
Start the system with the panels fitted and use the workload you expect at the desk. Adjust fan response so brief CPU spikes do not trigger constant surges, then confirm cooling during a sustained task. Keep cable bundles out of the fan path and leave ventilation space beside the case.
Our first boot and driver guide covers the setup order. If you get power without a picture, use the no-display checks before replacing parts.
For a machine that travels, follow Portable Mini-ITX builds and Best Cases for Portable PC Builds. A television setup has its own Living-Room Gaming builds and Best Controllers for a Living-Room PC decisions.
The upgrade I’d choose next
A fan-curve adjustment or a sensible power limit may do more for desk comfort than another fan. Move to a larger case when you need a long, thick GPU or a larger radiator. Change one heat or noise source at a time so the improvement remains easy to judge.
Compare the gaming build, design build, video-editing build, Blender build, everyday work build and quiet/compact build if the PC’s main job changes. For your first assembly, keep the beginner guide alongside the parts list.
