How to choose a PSU for your gaming PC

I choose the power supply before spending the last of a build budget on lighting or decoration. The right unit gives you the connections your system needs, enough capacity for the graphics card and cables you can route comfortably.
For named options by power, format and build purpose, use the gaming PSU buying guide. The compact PSU guide covers the SFX alternative.

ToggleStart with the graphics card and complete configuration
Read the exact GPU maker’s PSU recommendation and connector requirements. Include the CPU and other loads, and any specific planned upgrade. Do not add CPU and GPU marketing figures and treat the sum as a complete PSU specification.
A factory-overclocked card can have different power connections from another model of the same GPU. The ASUS Dual RX 9060 XT 16GB specification lists one 8-pin connection and a 550W recommended PSU; that does not make every 550W unit a suitable choice.
Quality and connectors before spare capacity
Look for a credible assessment of the exact PSU model and generation, useful protection behaviour, a suitable warranty and the leads required by your build. An efficiency certification describes efficiency under its scheme; it does not answer every quality or noise question.
Count the connections for the whole system before choosing the RM850e. Use supplied or explicitly approved cables; modular PSU connectors are not universally interchangeable.
Build the rest of an AM5 parts list in PC Builder to see the selected graphics card alongside the power supply and any supported power warnings.
A power supply I’d consider
The Corsair RM850e 2025 is an option to compare for a build needing its capabilities or planned expansion. It is unnecessarily expensive if a suitable lower-output unit meets your configuration at a better total cost.
Check the exact 2025 version and regional cable package. Corsair’s RMe 2025 documentation covers the series’ connections and dimensions. Do not assume an older similarly named unit is identical.
Check the PSU compartment too
Measure PSU length with the drive cage and the actual cable bend space. A modular connection adds cable and connector depth. Orient the fan according to the case and PSU instructions, leaving its intake unobstructed.
Route the main cables while there is room to reach the CPU power socket and GPU connection. Fully seat the plugs without side-panel pressure or a tight bend pulling them sideways. Follow the relevant lead maker’s routing instructions.
Rules for a reused unit
Identify model, age, condition and the genuine cable set. If you cannot establish a cable’s compatibility, do not try it. Do not open a PSU to inspect or repair it.
Use the graphics upgrade checklist before assuming that a unit which powered the old card will suit a new one.
Finish the power-supply decision
Work through load, connections and physical fit together. The efficiency calculation helps judge a rating premium without confusing wall power with output capacity.
Keep the replacement unit’s own lead set with it, including SATA cables behind drive trays. The modular-cable compatibility guide covers exact-model replacements and extensions.
