Use the capacity plan before paying for a PCIe generation premium. The SSD type/compatibility guide checks the exact connection, and the second-SSD guide covers adding a library drive.
For a new PC I’d start with a useful-sized M.2 NVMe drive, then choose the storage layout around the files you work with. The Crucial P310 2TB is the general gaming and work route; the WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB is my stronger project-drive shortlist for heavier creative use. Capacity and sustained work matter more than the biggest headline read number.

ToggleChoose by what the PC needs to do
Start with the files that need to stay on the PC. Windows and applications are only part of the list: games, active footage, RAW photos, texture libraries and render caches can take far more room. Leave usable free space for updates and working files rather than filling the drive the day you assemble the system.
Choose the purpose below for the direct shortlist. Each section also links to its detailed buying guide and the complete matching PC build. If you are starting from an empty desk, use the beginner’s complete PC guide first.

Best ssds for gaming
I’d choose 2TB for a new gaming PC before paying for the highest peak transfer number on a smaller drive. A library of large games can make 1TB feel restrictive quickly, and a useful SSD should leave room for updates. The P310 is the general-capacity choice here; the SN850X 2TB is the stronger performance-oriented alternative when its current offer fits the basket.
| Best for | My choice | Why I’d choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall gaming capacity | Crucial P310 2TB M.2 2280 | 2TB general-use drive for the installed library. |
| Best performance-focused 2TB choice | WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB | Premium Gen4 alternative without reducing useful capacity. |
| Best larger game library | WD_BLACK SN850X 4TB | 4TB when keeping more games installed matters. |
| Best smaller system-drive option | WD_BLACK SN850X 1TB | 1TB when the basket and actual library suit it. |

Best ssds for graphic design and photo editing
For a design workstation I’d start with the SN850X 2TB as the active drive, especially when large layered documents and scratch use are part of the routine. Keep enough free space for working files. The P310 2TB is the simpler starter choice for lighter use, while a second drive can separate the system from the active project folders.
| Best for | My choice | Why I’d choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall active design drive | WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB | 2TB performance-oriented project and scratch shortlist. |
| Best general starter capacity | Crucial P310 2TB M.2 2280 | 2TB for a more restrained design basket. |
| Best larger photo and project library | WD_BLACK SN850X 4TB | 4TB when active files need the room. |
| Best separate OS-drive option | WD_BLACK SN850X 1TB | 1TB for system and applications beside a project drive. |

Best ssds for video editing
For regular editing I’d choose the SN850X project-drive route, then decide whether 2TB or 4TB gives the working project enough room. Active footage, generated proxies, cache and previews can occupy far more space than the final export. A dedicated project drive is useful when it keeps those jobs organised and gives them room, rather than forcing every folder onto an almost-full system SSD.
| Best for | My choice | Why I’d choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall active-project SSD | WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB | 2TB Gen4 project-drive route for frequent media work. |
| Best smaller dedicated system drive | WD_BLACK SN850X 1TB | 1TB for Windows and applications beside the project drive. |
| Best larger footage library | WD_BLACK SN850X 4TB | 4TB for substantial active media and cache room. |
| Best light-project general capacity | Crucial P310 2TB M.2 2280 | 2TB for the modest learning basket rather than heavy sustained writes. |

Best ssds for blender and 3d rendering
A Blender storage plan should include the source scene, textures, simulation caches and generated frames. I’d choose the SN850X 2TB for active project work, moving to 4TB when the library and animation output need it. A separate system drive can make the folder layout easier to maintain, but it does not replace sufficient project capacity.
| Best for | My choice | Why I’d choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall Blender project drive | WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB | 2TB for scenes, textures and active caches. |
| Best larger asset library | WD_BLACK SN850X 4TB | 4TB when textures, animations and generated frames need space. |
| Best separate system drive | WD_BLACK SN850X 1TB | 1TB for OS and applications beside the asset drive. |
| Best smaller learning basket capacity | Crucial P310 2TB M.2 2280 | General 2TB route for lighter projects. |

Best ssds for everyday work
For everyday work I’d choose the amount of storage you will use before a premium speed tier. The P310 2TB gives a new office PC useful room for software and files. A 1TB drive is enough for some desks, particularly with small local documents and an organised external archive. The headline read speed is less useful than knowing where the files will live.
| Best for | My choice | Why I’d choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall work and file capacity | Crucial P310 2TB M.2 2280 | 2TB for applications and useful local file room. |
| Best smaller system-drive choice | WD_BLACK SN850X 1TB | 1TB when the actual working set is modest. |
| Best heavier local project work | WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB | Performance-oriented 2TB route for frequent large file tasks. |
| Best large active library | WD_BLACK SN850X 4TB | 4TB when substantial local data needs to stay available. |

Best ssds for quiet and compact builds
An M.2 NVMe drive is convenient in a compact build because it needs no separate SATA power or data lead. I’d start with the P310 2TB for gaming and office use, or the SN850X 2TB for heavier creative work. Install it before the large cooler and GPU make the socket difficult to reach, then use the motherboard’s supported heatsink arrangement.
| Best for | My choice | Why I’d choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall compact build capacity | Crucial P310 2TB M.2 2280 | 2TB M.2 keeps storage off the cable-routing plan. |
| Best compact creative project drive | WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB | 2TB performance-oriented option for more demanding file work. |
| Best larger cable-free library | WD_BLACK SN850X 4TB | 4TB without adding a SATA power and data pair. |

Match the choice to the rest of the build
Match the M.2 length and NVMe interface to the board socket. Follow the manual for the standoff position and heatsink, and remove the thermal-pad protective film where instructed. Capacity variants can have different performance and endurance ratings: use the sheet for the exact 1TB, 2TB or 4TB model rather than transferring a number from another version.
| Decision | Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Useful capacity | Installed software plus active files | A larger drive can be more valuable than a higher peak speed. |
| Workload | Game loads, everyday use or long project writes | Choose the project-drive route for sustained creative work. |
| Fit | M.2 2280, interface and heatsink | Match the socket and cooling arrangement. |
Use SSD capacity and installation guide for the practical selection details. Match the other parts with motherboards · ram kits · pc cases.
Set up the component properly
Install the OS drive in the intended slot and initialise extra drives carefully, identifying them by capacity and model before formatting. Keep firmware current using the supported manufacturer tool. Set creative cache folders deliberately and test your backup restore route before relying on it for important work. If you are replacing the Windows drive, choose cloning or a clean Windows installation before starting the swap.
