Use the motherboard overview to separate socket, chipset and exact-model features. Check the usable PCIe/M.2 combinations and the case/header connections before ordering.
A design motherboard should connect the working desk without taking money away from memory and the display. I’d choose the Eagle AX for the straightforward 9700X tower, then count the card reader, external drives, drawing tablet and other USB devices you leave attached. If those require a particular fast USB mode, buy that specification deliberately instead of judging by the number of sockets alone.

| Best for | My choice | Why I’d choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall AM5 design tower | Gigabyte B650 Eagle AX | Practical platform for the 9700X and two-module DDR5 kit. |
| Best compact design layout | MSI B850M Gaming Plus WiFi6E | Smaller board with useful networking and two M.2 sockets. |
| Best expanded workstation features | Gigabyte B850 Aorus Elite WiFi7 | For extra connection or storage needs that justify the board spend. |
Planning a new AM5 system? PC Builder brings the motherboard, CPU and DDR5 memory together with the rest of the tower and its estimated cost.
Best overall AM5 design tower: Gigabyte B650 Eagle AX
The Gigabyte B650 Eagle AX is the straightforward AM5 ATX tower choice. Its Wi-Fi and M.2 provision cover a practical first gaming or mixed-work build without making a premium board the first priority. Count the actual ports and use the support page for the exact revision. It is a full ATX board and does not fit the compact A3 case.
Why I’d choose it: Practical platform for the 9700X and two-module DDR5 kit.
Keep in the build plan: AM5; DDR5; ATX; revision-specific BIOS support.
Best compact design layout: MSI B850M Gaming Plus WiFi6E
The MSI B850M Gaming Plus WiFi6E is the compact AM5 route. Its micro-ATX layout works with the Lian Li A3, with four DDR5 slots, two M.2 sockets, Wi-Fi 6E and 2.5Gb Ethernet. It keeps the small build on a mainstream platform without requiring mini-ITX. Check the exact CPU support and leave usable space around a thick GPU and the lower headers.
Why I’d choose it: Smaller board with useful networking and two M.2 sockets.
Keep in the build plan: AM5; DDR5; micro-ATX; two M.2 sockets.
Best expanded workstation features: Gigabyte B850 Aorus Elite WiFi7
The Gigabyte B850 Aorus Elite WiFi7 is the fuller-featured AM5 tower alternative. I’d pay for it when its networking, storage layout and connections solve something on the build list. It does not replace the need for adequate RAM or a suitable GPU. Make the feature comparison against the Eagle AX using the devices you attach, then decide whether the extra board spend earns its place.
Why I’d choose it: For extra connection or storage needs that justify the board spend.
Keep in the build plan: AM5; DDR5; ATX; feature-led upgrade.
What matters for this build
Choose the socket before comparing extras. AM4, AM5 and LGA1851 are separate routes. DDR4 and DDR5 are also physically different memory types. A board with a more expensive chipset cannot make the wrong processor or memory fit. Keep those three lines together in the shopping list.
Make a connection list from your desk. Count the monitor connections for an integrated-graphics build, external drives, card readers, capture devices, wired networking and the case’s front USB sockets. Paying for the right connection is useful; buying a premium board for a port you will never use is not.
Plan storage beyond the first SSD. A project workstation may need a system drive, a second working drive and a future expansion card. Look at the slot layout and the manual’s lane-sharing notes. The presence of several M.2 sockets does not prove they all run at their headline speed with every CPU and card combination.
Micro-ATX can be a good smaller-build choice without requiring mini-ITX prices or a riser cable. The MSI B850M Gaming Plus WiFi6E provides an AM5 socket, four DDR5 slots, two M.2 sockets, Wi-Fi 6E and 2.5Gb Ethernet. Its compact dimensions match the A3-mATX route; the ATX Eagle does not fit that case.
| Decision | Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Platform | Exact CPU socket and memory type | Keep the CPU, board and RAM route together. |
| Layout | ATX or micro-ATX, GPU and extra cards | A physically smaller case needs a board that actually fits. |
| Connections | M.2, rear USB, front USB and networking | Spend on the devices you attach and the expansion you will use. |
Fit and installation checks
Match the exact processor and motherboard revision to the CPU support page. A newer Ryzen model may require a newer BIOS even when the socket is correct. For micro-ATX builds choose a micro-ATX board; for the Intel 270K Plus choose LGA1851. Read the manual’s memory slot order, front-panel header map and any storage lane-sharing rules before assembling.
Before changing the shortlist, use the parts-fit checklist. If a selected model is unavailable, make the replacement with the substitution checks so the connector, format or capacity does not change unnoticed.
Set up the part and finish the PC
Update firmware using the manufacturer’s supported procedure when required, then establish a stable boot before enabling memory profiles. Install chipset and network drivers. Attach the Wi-Fi antennas if using wireless networking, and use the wired port where the desk already has Ethernet.
