Set the supported fan-control mode and curve after installing this cooler. The case-fan shortlist covers intake/exhaust purchases that serve the complete build.
For the 9700X design workstation I’d start with the Peerless Assassin, with the Freezer 36 on the simpler 9600X basket. Air cooling leaves radiator space out of the first build. The larger spending priorities for ordinary design remain memory, useful storage and the screen.

| Best for | My choice | Why I’d choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall practical design cooling | Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE | Dual tower for the 9700X workstation. |
| Best starter design CPU route | ARCTIC Freezer 36 Black | For the restrained 9600X basket. |
| Best fuller air alternative | Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE Black | Larger-air shortlist without a pump. |
| Best CPU-render addition | ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 | For sustained CPU-heavy secondary work. |

Best overall practical design cooling: Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE
The Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE is the dual-tower air-cooling starting point. Its 155mm heatsink height makes it relevant to many ordinary towers and the planned A3 route with low-profile RAM. Allow for the actual fan position before comparing with the case limit. I’d put it on the shortlist before assuming a gaming CPU needs liquid cooling.
Why I’d choose it: Dual tower for the 9700X workstation.
Keep in the build plan: Dual-tower air cooler; 155mm heatsink; allow RAM-side fan height.
Best starter design CPU route: ARCTIC Freezer 36 Black
The ARCTIC Freezer 36 is the simple air-cooling route for a sensible-power processor. It keeps the build free of a pump and radiator, with a conventional tower arrangement. I’d choose it for the 9600X office or compact route and use the correct supplied socket fittings. Set a deliberate fan curve so ordinary short tasks do not produce constant speed changes.
Why I’d choose it: For the restrained 9600X basket.
Keep in the build plan: Air cooling; AM4/AM5 and supported Intel mounting; check exact kit.
Best fuller air alternative: Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE Black
The Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE Black is the fuller dual-tower alternative. Its published heatsink height is 154mm, but clearance still includes the front fan and memory. I’d compare it with the Peerless Assassin on the installed layout and current offers, keeping enough capacity for the workload. A larger air cooler remains a fit decision rather than an automatic universal winner.
Why I’d choose it: Larger-air shortlist without a pump.
Keep in the build plan: Dual-tower air cooler; 154mm heatsink; seven heatpipes.
Best CPU-render addition: ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360
The ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 is the large-AIO route for a sustained CPU workload in a suitable tower. Its 38mm radiator needs room for fans and the surrounding hardware, not just a case label saying “360mm”. I’d choose it with a deliberate radiator location and the correct socket mounting. It adds a pump and hoses, so plan access and wiring.
Why I’d choose it: For sustained CPU-heavy secondary work.
Keep in the build plan: 360mm AIO; 38mm radiator before fans; larger-case layout.
What matters for this build
Air cooling keeps the system straightforward: a heatsink, mounting hardware and one or more replaceable fans. An AIO moves heat to a radiator and adds a pump, hoses and more layout decisions. Both can be appropriate; the better route is the one that handles the CPU’s real workload and fits the case you want.
A short boost is different from a long render. A modest-power processor doing ordinary design or gaming work can make good use of a suitable tower cooler. A high-power CPU exporting or rendering for long periods deserves more attention to cooling space, power settings and fan response. The CPU’s nominal TDP is not a complete description of every operating load.
Keep the socket kit explicit. AM4, AM5, LGA1700 and LGA1851 mounting arrangements are not a licence to improvise. Identify the exact included or approved mounting hardware before applying thermal paste. Follow the manufacturer’s tightening sequence; more force is not a cooling upgrade.
Clearance includes the fan position. Thermalright lists the Peerless Assassin 120 SE heatsink at 155mm and the Phantom Spirit 120 SE at 154mm. Tall RAM can require a raised front fan. The A3’s 165mm limit leaves a practical planning margin with low-profile memory, while a larger premium cooler may need a different case.
| Decision | Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Load | CPU model and sustained tasks | Match the cooler to real work and chosen power settings. |
| Fit | Socket, height, RAM and radiator space | A compatible mounting kit does not prove physical clearance. |
| Ownership | Fans, pump, cleaning and controls | Choose an arrangement you can maintain and configure. |
Fit and installation checks
Read the cooler’s mounting instructions for the exact socket. Check RAM-side fan height before comparing with the case limit. The Liquid Freezer III Pro uses a 38mm radiator, so allow that plus fans, hoses and nearby board heatsinks. A case supporting “360mm” specifies the class of radiator, not unlimited thickness in every mounting position.
Before changing the shortlist, use the parts-fit checklist. If a selected model is unavailable, make the replacement with the substitution checks so the connector, format or capacity does not change unnoticed.
Set up the part and finish the PC
Connect the cooler and pump, if present, to the appropriate headers and control mode. Remove the contact-plate protective film where instructed and use the correct paste arrangement. Check fan operation, then assess temperatures under a representative sustained task with the panels fitted before refining the curve.
