For a normal desktop build, a well-fitting Phillips screwdriver, clear work space and organised screws do most of the job. Choose a kit when its extra tools serve the devices you actually maintain.
Table of Contents
ToggleThe shortlist: choose for your setup
| Use | My choice | Why choose it | Choose another when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Affordable small-device tool set | iFixit Essential Electronics Toolkit | A manageable driver and opening-tool kit for straightforward electronics work. | You only need one desktop screwdriver or want a broader precision bit selection. |
| Broader precision fasteners | iFixit Mako Driver Kit | A 64-bit precision set when you maintain several devices with different screws. | A normal desktop build does not require the extra fastener types. |
| Regular electronics maintenance | iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit | A broader repair kit including precision drivers and handling/opening tools. | You are buying for a one-off tower build and would leave most of the kit unused. |
More bits do not make a first build better. These routes compare kit contents and the work they cover; a precision kit may still need a separate longer screwdriver for recessed case screws.
Affordable small-device tool set: iFixit Essential Electronics Toolkit
Essential Electronics is the compact route for someone who also works on small devices. Compare the actual included Phillips sizes with the build’s fasteners, and add a longer suitable driver where a tower’s clearance requires one.
The opening tools earn their place on appropriate device housings. Most desktop component fitting uses screws and latches instead, so there is no reason to pry a connector that should release through its documented locking mechanism.
Broader precision fasteners: iFixit Mako Driver Kit
Choose Mako for a varied repair bench rather than simply because the bit count is larger. Match the bit firmly to the screw before turning, and stop if the screw head starts to deform. An organised set makes the right size easier to find.
For motherboard and case work, reach and handle control are as important as the available bit profiles. Keep the correct small driver for delicate M.2 screws and a suitable longer driver for the case.
Regular electronics maintenance: iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit
Pro Tech is the wider-maintenance route. Its additional tools matter when you service several kinds of electronics; for one PC build, a smaller selection can be easier to manage. Follow the supported repair instructions for each device.
Keep static handling deliberate and use an ESD arrangement according to its instructions. Work with the PC shut down and disconnected from mains. Never open the PSU casing: replacement is the appropriate PC-builder route for a faulty power supply.
Organise the work before the first screw
Use a stable clear table, keep liquids away and separate screw types in labelled containers. Check motherboard standoff positions before fitting the board; an extra standoff under the wrong point can create a fault.
Start threads by hand and tighten to the component’s instructions rather than using maximum force. For cooler fitting, follow the supplied sequence and the supported socket/mounting route.
Correct bit and enough reach
Clear table and deliberate ESD handling
Labelled screw groups and manuals
Standoffs, connectors and fit before power
Finish the setup
Use the fit checklist, assembly guide and first-boot steps. Keep the kit together for the next upgrade.
